N°194: From Electrons To Stars

In March 2013, the European Space Agency [ESA] will launch GAIA. A successor of Hypparcos, GAIA will have the task to generate a complete, three dimensional map of our Milky Way galaxy.
Last summer, I was contacted by French astro-physician Thibaut Prod'homme, who works at the Leiden University. I worked as a cover artist for his brilliant Thésis: "From Electrons to Stars: Modelling and mitigation of radiation damage effects on astronomical CCDs". It was a no brainer for me, as I enjoy the idea to work for many different fields, Astro-physics being certainly an exciting one !

From the thesis: "To visualize outer space and immense manifestations such as solar eruptions, French illustrator Julien ALDAY manipulates photographic elements
by shooting oxidation upon metallic plates.
In recording a small chemical reaction, he ultimately depicts events on a cosmic scale.
From top to bottom the graphical elements represent the Gaia spacecraft downlinking data to Earth, the Earth and its magnetosphere, the Sun and the solar wind"

N°193: When We Were Executioners

Happy Halloween everybody !
Today I want to share with you guys the illustration I made for When We Were Executioners, second book from the Dogsland trilogy, by one of the rising star of Fantasy: J.M McDermott. You guys might remember the cover art I made for book one, Never Knew Another. I'm glad to be the cover artist for such great stories. And you guys will have a blast if you are looking for non conventional fantasy books.

In order to represent Dogsland, I used samples from Mont St-Michel shots I made years ago, while haveing time with my dear American friends, Mike and Alex [Hello, Elliot !].
The character on the cover wore his assassin's clothes, I found interesting to use it as a way to reavel his real nature, the one he tries to hide. So here's for the scales, suggesting his "demon" nature. The shots cames from a Pangolin. Yeah, I had a Pangolin at home, once.
A few elements were made as a reminder from my first cover, as wanted by my publisher, Night Shade Books.

Back from Paris, where I was attending CFSL Workshop as a staff member. I had a blast, as I saw old friends and met new ones. A unique event in France. Then, I had the chance to met and talk with some of my heroes: Kent Williams and Allen Spiegel [thank you Nick and Anabelle ].

De retour de Paris, où j'ai participé au CFSL Workshop en tant que membre du staff. C'était l'occasion de revoir de vieux amis et d'en rencontrer de nouveaux. En un mot: j'ai kiffé ! Puis j'ai également eut l'occasion de rencontrer deux de mes héros, à savoir Kent Williams et Allen Spiegel [Merci Nick et Anabelle].

Un gros merci à Claire et Maïka [merci les filles], pour nous avoir hébergés, Brutal Moineau et moi.
À Kness and Made, les organisateurs. Vous êtes formidable et vous sentez bon [1]

Il y a les gens à qui je n'ai parlé que trop brièvement, mais je suis sûr qu'il y aura d'autres occasions ! ;)

Merci à Nerval et Jean-Sebastien Rossbach pour leurs interventions. C'est toujours riche, et puis ça permet de recharger les accus ! :)

Enfin, un grand merci à Andoryss, parce que trouver une fille avec qui je puisse chanter "I just had sex" aux Furieux, me faire démonter le bras dans la foulée et surtout m'expliquer certains aspects physionomiques[2] propre au dessinateur mâle, bein c'est pas rien. Et si tu me lis, merci pour-tu-sais-quoi. :3 Et j'en rajoute une couche ! ;3

Au fait: lisez "Les Enfants D'Evernight", chez Delcourt. Bonne lecture, et grosse surprise: ça pourrait passer pour de l'Heroic Fantasy au premier coup d'œil. À la lecture, on pense progressivement à des héros et des thèmes de la littérature Victorienne dilués dans ce tableau. Et c'est plus que ça.

Sinon, je ne remercie pas:
-Paris. Des piétons aux scooters, en passant par les cyclistes: vous êtes complétement cinglés les mecs ! J'ai faillit en avaler mon cure-dent ! Heureusement pour vous qu'il y avait Daji [c'était ça ou le Body-count] !
-La SNCF. Pour m'avoir privé de Crowley et de HK ! Pour m'avoir privé de train au retour. Comme si ça allait me stopper !

J'avais prévu de finir cette image avant le workshop, mais je suis arrivé à court de temps... On va parler de work in progress. Je ne la pousserai pas plus loin, je dois me consacrer à la bande dessinée, maintenant. Ça va être très amusant ! :)

I planned to finish this one before go to the workshop, but wasn't able to do... So, let's consider this as a WIP. I will probably don't push this one further, as I'm dedicated to comics art right now. It's going to be a lot of fun ! :)

A special thanks to Jean-Sebastien Rossbach, for bringing the perfect soundtrack to my attention. Being a huge fan of Alva Noto since years now, and I guess there's no need to introduce you guys to Ryuichi Sakamoto. Their collaboration through the past years gave so much little gems. And their last album, Summvs, is no exception.

I have to do quick today, sorry folks !
Just a work in progress today. Still a lot of things to do on this one, but I like it that way: bold, raw, energic with a few smooth textures: Acrylic splashes over ink washes.

The font I used for that picture is "Nagasaki", designed by an all time favourite o' mine: Tom Muller. Always wanted to have a Muller font to work with. You can find it via the great Hypefortype website ! And even if it's not finish, I had a blast with it !

Long time, no blog. The place started to be kinda dusty here.
Sorry for that, Folks ! Being very busy, and not always Art related.
Anyway, back to blog.

Like we said in France: "À tout Seigneur tout honneur" ! I will start with the Gorilla Artbook, a great compendium of the Gorilla Artfare collective. Being a member from the early days, it feels great to see what was just a bunch of friends, back in the day, being featured in one heavy book ! And what a book !

Alongside my "regular" illustration work, I have made a couple of fake-movie posters collaborations with Cody Tilson, The Great and The Almighty Crowley. Props to Federico Piatti and Victoria Maderna for their awesome, Saul Bass style, design.

On a personal side, this book is also the opportunity to be published with all my old friends from GA ! Adam Paquette, Alexander Draude, Alice Duke, Aly Fell, Ben Foster, Björn Hurri, C.R. I have also been featured on CFSL Artbook 05. I have allready said it, but to my opinion, this illustration anthology is the only French equivalent to Spectrum, so far. I'm featured with my man Nénent for our artwork on short comic "Mauvaises Graines". You can order this beauty here.

Last but not least, Magnitude 9 ! Countaining illustrations from the Tsunami initiative. A great book for a noble cause. I'm glad to be a part of it. All the artists in this book gave their best. You can find the heavy 256 pages book here.

Le 11 Mars 2011, alors que mon père s'éteignait paisiblement, un tremblement de terre d'une magnitude de 9 frappait le Japon. Ce jour-là, tout semblait aller de travers dans le monde. Je n'oublierai jamais la date du 11 Mars.

Le Japon a été une grande part de ma vie pendant quatre ans et demi, et c'est pourquoi j'ai décidé de participer à l'initiative Tsunami, lancée par le collectif CFSL. Une sélection d' images publiées sûr le blog sera mise en vente à la Galerie Arludik le 30 Avril. Suivra la publication de "Magnitude 9", un recueil d'images que vous pouvez déjà pré-commander ici.

Les bénéfices seront reversés à Give2Asia.

Une prière pour le Japon,
avec des morceaux de moi.

On March 11th, as my father passed away, a magnitude 9 earthquake hit Japan. This day, everything seems going wrong in the world. I will never forget March 11th. Never.

Japan has been an important part of my life during four years and a half, that's why I decided to join the Tsunami initiative, launched by the French Café Salé community. A selection of 51 pictures will be sold at the charity auction, on April 30th, at Arludik Gallery, Paris.

Then will follow the publication of a book, "Magnitude 9", that you can pre-order here.

The profit will be send to Give2Asia.

Hello, Folks !
Actually, Gorilla Artfare's blog turned 3 years old a few days ago and, following the tradition, we made a collective post. Topic this year was "A song that inspires you"...

Geez ! What a tough choice ! I switch' between artist like Nick Cave [and the Bad Seeds], NIN, Johnny Cash, 16 Horsepower/Woven Hand, Depeche Mode, Deftones, Ministry, Serge Gainsbourg, Alain Bashung, Massive Attack, Boards Of Canada, etc... The list is endless !

Finally, my choice goes [at the Buzzer !] to "Monkey Gone To Heaven" by The Pixies.
This one was quickly made: just a few hours. The initial shot was made years ago, at the San Francisco's Kimball Natural History Museum [A great one ! Thank you Mike !]

On a personal note: I go to Paris next week, visiting friends and take a look at the Carbone Exhibition. I'm sure that I'm going to have a blast. ^^

N°178: Mauvaises Graines !

Bonjour à tous !
Aujourd'hui est un grand jour ! En effet, CFSL INK vient de lancer le site officiel de BRUME, un collectif de Bande Dessinée réunissant 31 auteurs pour 19 histoires courtes sûr un total de 276 pages ! Le beau bébé que voilà ! Avec pour thématique l'environnement, cet album a pour vocation de participer à l'action de la LPO. Et à titre tout à fait personnel, vous allez en prendre plein les yeux. ;)

Nénent et moi sommes amis depuis quelque temps déjà, et avons souvent parlé de faire une collaboration en média mixte. L'occasion était trop belle avec Brume et après moult efforts [et autant de conversations téléphoniques-je vous parle même pas des échanges de mails/fichiers] voici notre premier bébé: Mauvaises Graines, un court récit de 8 pages fait à quatre mains [1], de A à Z et malgré les apparences, il sera en réalité très difficile de deviner qui fait quoi.

Pour citer Clément: quelque chose que nous pouvons aisément qualifier de mix-média à la sauce "fais comme tu veux, j'ai perdu la recette" ^^

Voici la couverture.

Mauvaises Graines, où le parcours d'un petit robot - fantassin de son état, qui quitte un amas de détritus et de rouille pour découvrir "la nature". Une nature qu'il ne connait que part le biais d'un livre, son seul compagnon. Commence alors un dangereux voyage pour notre héros.

C'est le moment de remercier, évidement, l'ami Clément pour cette expérience forte, pleine de rires - la faute à nos natures respectives- et d'aller-retours. Pour le bien de l'humanité, aucune blague produite durant la réalisation de "Mauvaises Graines" ne sera restituée ici. :P

Un GRAND merci à Karine, notre super-éditrice, pour nous avoir ramené à la couleur, pour sa patience, ses conseils, ses crêpes et parce qu'elle est cool. ^^

Merci à Marmotte pour nous avoir évité, dès le story-board une potentielle-bourde-monumentale ! Et nous avoir glissé la réponse à l'oreille. Merci Véro.

Today is a great day !
Brume, the first comic-book anthology published by CFSL INK will be in store very soon, in France, that is.
It was the opportunity for my dear friend Nénent and I to work on a short story called "Mauvaises Graines" [Bad Seeds]. It will surprised a few people, according to the fact we are both working in very different ways. However, this short story was a perfect mix between our methods. Sensibility ? It was the same.

I will drop a proper english version of this post on Gorilla Artfare's blog in a few days, maybe with a proper english translation of a page ! Stay tuned !

Bonjour à tous,
Tout d'abord, je tenais à vous souhaiter une bonne année 2011. Puisse cette année vous apporter de bonnes choses, à vous et à vos proches.

Je termine actuellement une série de corrections sûr quatre illustrations pour une publication future. S'ajoute à cela deux collaborations faites avec deux amis chers. Et bien sûr, les sorties de Brume le 28 Janvier et de Never Knew Another le 01 Février.

À partir de là, je commencerai un petit récit un peu fou pour ce blog avec pour objectif de le terminer pour cette fin d'année, sûr mon temps libre. C'est un peu mon pari pour cette année 2011. Le récit se nomme temporairement CN9 et voici une image-teaser.

First of all, I want to wish you guys a happy new year 2011. Can this year brings you good things to your familly, friends and you !

I'm currently polishing four illustrations for a future publication, plus two others collaborations with dear friends of mine. Let's add to that the upcoming release of French comic-book anthology Brume on January 28th and J.M. McDermott's Never Knew Another on February 1st.

Then, I will start to work on a lil', a bit crazy, sequential. The idea is to make it on my free time and to put it here on this blog, before the end of 2011. That's my goal for this year. Working title project is CN9 and you can see the teaser above.

Enfin, joie ! Mon ami Scott Altmann m'a fait parvenir une superbe impression de son cru et c'est adorable, n'est-il pas ? [la photo ne rend pas justice à son travail, à updater] À ce propos, j'attends avec impatience un autre print afin de garnir mes murs [tu te reconnaitras] ! :3

N°173: Jona's Tears

Bonjour à tous !
I was contacted last summer by Night Shade Books' Art Director for being the cover artist of J.M. McDermott new novel: Never Knew Another. I think the reason why I was hired was to bring my usual treatment to a genre I was not so familiar with, so far. It was a challenge for me and a great opportunity to make my first book cover for the US market. Here's the full illustration, including the [huge] bleed area.

Jona's tears [photography, ink, acrylic, ashes, mac]

I don't want to reveal the story so far, but I came with the idea to bring one physical manifestation [those weird, tentacular red roots] with an emotional manifestation [as tears drop from the skull]. You will have to read the book, but my point was, from early rough to finished version, to put a connection between those two separated elements. They are just a reflection, to me, of Jona's life.

And that's why J.M. McDermott script was a great read ! It was really open for me, as a foreigner and more important, as an illustrator. Whatever the genre, the way he play with structure is one reason why I'm honored to be the cover artist of Never Knew Another. [And he's also the reason why I start to enjoy reading novels in English, after all that time. I even ordered his novel: The Last Dragon]

A few challenges for me on this illustration were:
-Using my well known fox as a wolf skin.
-Finding sunflowers in late summer ! They are all burnt/dead at that time of the year, on the French west coast. Hopefully, I found one survivor, one tiny fellah. He grew healthy and tall on the final picture.

You can see a preliminary version of the book cover on the Author's blog. I want to mention that the design was made by my great friends Federico Piatti and Victoria Maderna. I had the chance and honor to host them at home a year ago... Like we say in French: Le monde est petit [world is small] !

A special thanks to Dave Palumbo, mostly for tolerate my bad english on the phone [geez, you might have suffered a lot, mon ami].
To J.M. Mcdermott, who took the time to gave me more informations, via Dave, about the characters look and his own intentions. It was a great read for me.
To Federico and Vic' ! knowing you were doing the design over my illustration was a highlight for me.

Une semaine déjà et le sentiment que l'événement n'était qu'un rêve... J'en suis revenu tout jet-lagué [merci les grèves]. Voici donc des photos prisent lors du Workshop CFSL, deuxième édition. Histoire de prolonger l'instant magique.

Un grand merci à Kness, Made, Nicolab, Reuno, Gary, Esme, David, Manu, Ando, Sephiel, Manu XYZ, et j'espère n'oublier personne. Merci aux instructeurs. Mathieu Lauffray, Aleksi, Michel, Ntamak, JSR et Nerval. J'ai appris beaucoup de choses, à commencer par une prise de conscience, celle de mon ignorance à propos de certains points/sujets. Certains "cours" furent à plus d'un titre, galvanisants [mention très bien à JSR et Maitre Nerval]. I'm currently polishing a book cover before go back into comic book stuff. I'm really happy with what I produced so far and do hope be able to use that current mood for push a few personal projects further.

How weird was last week ! Like constants, exponantials jumps between good and bad news. I don't know where to start. :P I feel pretty jet lagged actually.

This past week was for me the opportunity to sign books, for the realesed of Café Salé artbook volume 4. I was with a bunch of talented and nice guys, such as Moon, Cyrille, David Gribouille and young prodigy Timo, in the lovely city of Nantes.

This Artbook, now in it's 4th publication, is unique in France, kinda like a french equivalent of Spectrum. Really, if there's one book from France that should catch your attention, this one is a must have ! Here's a link where you can buy it. Plus a video teaser. Enjoy ! ^^

That's a sad new: The Greatest is no more. Frank Frazetta passed away and it's hard for me to express now what i love in his art, but I'm sure his legacy will live for a very long time.

Sorry, Folks, I've been absent for so long ! Being busy, but with the less spectacular art manifestation: I was writting. I will tell you more about this at the end of the month, maybe with some art. Here's a quick doodle I did for celebrate May.

This one was made will watching for the second time the two videos from my good friend, Clo. I had a blast watching this two part tutorial, something I was waiting for a while, specially after the one made by Véronique Meignaud. Both are highly recommanded ! I'll add that I was very surprised to see Clo in action: it's an all Photoshop-made illustration, wich leave me speechless: it looks so more natural and organic, specially the drawing ! Hello, everybody !
Sometimes, you are making some researches with a particular topic in mind and then discover something completly different. I found this wonderful short version of Alice In Wonderland from 1903. As far as I know, it's the first movie adaptation ever made... And I'm pretty impressed with the result. Thanks to the BFI National Archive for restore and share online this video. A nine minutes long version is availible here.

Also, French artist AcerB and writter David Chauvel just finished their own comic-book adaptation of Lewis Carroll's classic. Check AcerB's blog for more eye-candies. :)

And no, I will not wrotte a line about Tim Burton's movie ! :P

I was close to put that one into the trash, for be honest. A full afternoon of digital drawing/painting, plus my evening spent on corrections and textures. I tried something a lil' different here, but nothing crazy. We will see if I can push it further in the future.

Acrylic and ink painting were used for the texture, plus ink splashes and chalkboard.

Bonjour à tous,
aucune nouvelle fracassante aujourd'hui, je balance juste pèle-mêle à peu près tout ce qui me passe sous la main. Enfin, ce que je m'autorise à vous montrer. Je ne suis pas dans une forme olympique en ce moment, merci à ce long troisième hiver. J'ai profité de ma relative convalescence à mettre sur pied un petit plan de travail pour quatre-cinq petites histoires. Certaines devraient atterrir sur des bureaux, d'autres se présenteront peut-être sous la forme de petits fichier PDF téléchargeables ici, sur ce blog. Ce dernier point reste à définir. Pas de dates prévues, ce sera fait sûr mon temps libre. Je vous montrerai certainement les recherches faites, au fur et à mesure.

Cette dernière recherche fut réalisée pendant le deuxième visionnage de "Stream Of Conciousness" par Véronique Meignaud, aka Marmotte. C'est un tutoriel vidéo constitué de deux parties distinctes, l'une consacrée au dessin, l'autre à l'illustration faite sûr photoshop. Avec bien évidement l'approche, unique suis-je tenté de dire, de l'artiste.

Honnêtement, j'étais très réfractaire à la simple idée de télécharger des tutoriels vidéos. Les raisons sont multiples, la principale restant une fierté mal placée [et j'en ai des wagons pleins à craquer] à la simple idée de regarder l'élaboration d'une image de A à Z. Pas envie de me faire influencer, pas envie de "piquer" les méthodes d'autres artistes -consciemment où non, ça plus d'autres trucs.

J'ai changé d'avis après avoir vu les deux vidéos de Véronique. Ma préférée reste celle sûr le dessin, son approche m'a vraiment surpris et pour être honnête, dès le départ, je pensai qu'elle allait partir dans le mur ! :P Il n'en est rien et cet étrange rapport entre contrôle et approche "free style" m'a laissé pantois [Putain, la maitrise !]. La deuxième vidéo reste très très intéressante. Sans trop vouloir vous révéler ce que vous pourrez y trouver, disons que ça parle technique, mais de manière suffisamment "globale" pour vous permettre de creuser par vous même. C'est plus l'approche qui compte et il y a plein, plein d'autre choses... À vous de les découvrir.

Maintenant que j'ai revu ma position concernant les downloads de tutoriels, je pense déjà à en acheter d'autres. Surtout la tienne ! Oui, toi là-bas, au fond ! Je l'attend avec impatience. Tu te reconnaitras ! ;)

Today, I want to push the "rewind" button of my memories and bring you back to San Francisco, at the Amnesia Bar, where Mike Dutton and I were listening to Japanese local legend, Toshio Hirano ! There was a long time I heard of him and it was a real pleasure to see this man, playing bluegrass songs in that small, dark and excellent place that is Amnesia [1].

At the end of the set, we briefly talked in a mix of english and japanese... I told him I will send him some shots I made. So here a work in progress of this small session, trying to make him fade, almost like a ghost. Can't tell you why, but I hope he'll like it.

Some of you allready know what Mike and I found out of the bar that night.

Rock 'N Roll et documentaires font souvent bon ménage. Citons par exemple "DIG" et "Some Kind Of Monster" entre autre. Récemment, j'ai vu le documentaire consacré à Joy Division par le britannique Grant Gee, architecte de formation. Et c'est là où je trouve que l'angle d'attaque du documentaire est, en tous points, merveilleusement intelligent. Gee illustre la modernité de la musique de Joy Division avec l'introduction de la ville, Manchester, dans cette même modernité.

Documentaire complet, très bien structuré [bravo à Jon Savage] avec je pense, tous les intervenants nécessaires, y compris le grand Anton Corbijn, photographe pour le groupe, puis, plus tard, réalisateur du film "Control", que je n'ai toujours pas vu.

Un spécial "Joy Division" aujourd'hui, donc. J'ai monté ensemble, et ce de manière très limitée, un ensemble de photographies d'écran de télévision, le dit écran n'affichant qu'une image fixe, celle d'une portion de photo digitale prise antérieurement, quelque part entre Paris et San Francisco. Utilisation très limitée de la typo, en scindant les paroles de "She's Lost Control" en deux blocs textes distincts. Pour moi, ces deux blocs semblent se répondre, ça tient à une rythmique et à quelque chose de binaire. Froid, aussi. Et dangereux. C'est tout Joy Division à mes yeux ! ^^

Je me réserve le droit de laisser à un ami, le soin de corriger les imperfections de ce petit exercice. Une autre version de l'image apparaitre sous peu, je pense.

Je profite d'une petite pause, je considère que vous regardez par dessus mon épaule, mais officiellement, je ne peux rien vous montrer. ;)

I'm enjoying a little breack after working, I can't show anything right now, but I consider you are looking over my shoulder. ;)

L'année se termine dans quelque jours, une question me vient en tête- et pour "citer" le grand Serge: 2009, année érotique ? C'est assez curieux, mais visiblement, plusieurs artistes de ma connaissance se sont risqués à l'exercice cette année. Où bien: cette année représente l'aboutissement d'un travail commencé en amont. Toujours est-il que sur ma tablette graphique, reposent actuellement les œuvres érotiques de l'année.

De gauche à droite:

- Poèmes Érotiques, des éditions petit à petit: Vous vous souviendrez certainement d'une note antérieure, je ne vais donc pas répéter ce qui a été déjà dit. Le livre est disponible depuis le douze novembre, le line-up est impressionnant et le livre, à part quelques scories, est vraiment un très bel objet. Satisfaction personnelle: Ce projet était pour moi l'occasion d'être présent aux côtés de mes amis Clo et Nénent. ^^

- Quickie est un superbe recueil de peintures à l'huile, format carte postale, par mon bon ami, Dave Palumbo. Allez donc visiter le blog dédié aux belles dénudées à grand coup de pinceaux. Profitez-en pour commander le premier volume, un autre est déjà en route ! ;)

- EROS, par Véronique Meignaud, est un segment d'un plus grand dessein, celui de Maya, qui à travers la collection Le Paravent des Ires, permet à sept auteurs d'illustrer sept segments du Poème "La Chute" de Franz-Olivier Seewald. Petit format élégant et fragile, je suis surpris de voir mon exemplaire dédicacé [soyez jaloux, pauvres mortels] survivre à une traversée Paris-San Fransisco, allez-retour ! ^^; Lucky me ! C'est de loin, le projet le plus intéressant de l'année pour moi. Inutile de dire que je compte acquérir les six autres livres dès Janvier ! ;)

Pour finir: Belle du Jour, par le Pervers de Pixar, le génial Bill Pressing ! L'édition sur la table est l'un des derniers exemplaire de la version US [auto publiée] et dédicacé [hahahaha !] ! N'en cherchez pas d'autre, c'est épuisé ! Par contre, ce livre connait une version Française avec une maquette différente et une intro par Arthur DePim's. Je vous laisse chercher la bête par vous même.

Last but not least: Premières Fois, Delcourt. Sybilline aux commandes de dix récits, courts, en noir et blanc avec un line-up impressionnant: Alfred, Capucine, D'Aviau, Augustin, Vince, Rica, Vatine, Pedrosa, Bertail et McKEAN ! o_O
...
Bon, en fait, à part deux-trois récits, je n'ai pas lu le livre dans son ensemble, je ne me permettrai pas d'écrire un avis dessus, désolé. ^_^;

Voici sans aucun doute l'une des choses les plus bizarres qu'il m'ait été donné de voir. La vidéo suivante provient de Philips Design Probe, une branche du géant Néerlandais. À l'heure où les petits génies de l'Université de Pennsylvanie travaillent sur la possibilité d'implanter sous la peau de minuscules LED, faisant ainsi office de tatouage, Philips décide de prendre les devants, via ce clip, purement promotionnel, avec l'une des applications les plus étranges qui soit: le tatouage évolutif et tactile. À nous donc les corps dénudés qui se couvrent de tatoo sous l'impulsion d'une caresse...

Certains d'entre nous aurons largement reconnu l'usage de logiciels tels que Alchemy, entre autre. Ce qui nous met la puce à l'oreille [passez-moi l'expression] sur la vrai nature de ce clip, puisqu'il s'agit d'un vrai fake, labellisé par une compagnie: ce clip ne représente à aucun moment un quelconque compte rendu des avancées de la boite. Ce clip n'a d'autre fonction que de participer à l'image de la boite. Ce genre de pratique ne m'est pas étrangère et, si ma mémoire est bonne, Nokia est passé également par une agence publicitaire pour nous parler de son future téléphone/montre/tableur... composé de nano machines, s'il vous plait ! Et c'était il y a quoi ? Deux ans ? Inutile de dire que je ne connais pas le degré d'achèvement du projet à l'heure actuelle. Qui le sait, d'ailleurs ?

Voilà le futur : les compagnies font appel à l'image, la communication, anticipant largement sur des produits, des services et même au-delà: sur la technologie elle même. Ce n'est pas une attaque, plus un constat qu'autre chose... Et ça risque de se généraliser.

Pour revenir à la vidéo de Philips, je trouve curieux cette approche érotique, arty, quand les applications possibles pourraient être tout autre: J'ai pensé tout de suite à une "montre" sous le poignet. Un passage du doigt et je change de fuseau horaire. Le reporter Américain Charlie Sorrel, mentionne également de possible GPS sous la peau, ou encore l'idée de transformer le corps en panneau publicitaire vivant.

Un feu de bois et un chat endormi, il ne m'en faut pas plus... Je profite de l'occasion pour vous souhaiter un joyeux noël et de bonnes fêtes de fin d'année.
A fire place and a sleeping cat, I don't need much more... It's the opportunity to wish you a merry Christmass and Happy Hollidays.

Je ne peux rien montrer pour l'instant, car je travaille sur une illustration qui devrait atterrir à Portland en Janvier, pour une exposition. On en reparle bientôt ! ;) Ceci dit, voilà le genre d'expérimentation que je pratique sur mon temps libre. Je travaille avec un matériel archaïque, passant de photos numériques à des supports analogiques... à savoir un bête téléviseur à tube cathodique afin de re-capturer en numérique les images. J'adore apporter de nombreuses altérations à mes images. Pour l'instant, ce n'est que de l'expérimentation, mais j'espère pouvoir pousser cette première session plus loin. Ainsi que la deuxième, ainsi que la troisième, etc...

I can't show you anything right now. I'm currently working a illustration for a collective show in Portland, for next January. I will tell you more about that soon. ;) That said, here's the kind of experimentation I did on my free time. I worked with an archaic gear, roughly, switching my digital shots to an old TV before capture that picture in digital again. I love bring alterations to my pictures. So far, this is just experimentation, but I do hope push that first session further. So the second one, and also the third, ect...

Ce que j'avais photographié ce soir là me semble être aujourd'hui une manifestation des Parques.
Je suis, évidement, complétement incapable de vous dire pourquoi. L'Amnésie, sans doute. ;)

La très respectable revue WIRED vient de publier un petit article concernant la collection de Steven Gettis. Certains d'entre vous se souviendront de ma contribution, rejoignant celles de monstres sacrés du domaine de l'illustration et de la bande dessinée [1]. J'étais donc très surpris de voir mon portrait de William Gibson sélectionné pour cet article. Et, il faut bien l'avouer: si mon anglais "sonne" à la perfection, c'est en grande partie due à l'aide apportée par mon ami Dave Palumbo. :P

Bonjour à tous,
il me sera difficile, décalage horaire oblige, d'organiser de manière cohérentes les souvenirs de ces deux dernières semaines. Pour l'instant, ces quinze jours semblent être comprimés en une seule image, floue, mobilis in mobile, perdue quelque pars entre Paris et San Francisco. Et tout ce que je peux faire, c'est d'en extraire des clichés pris au hasard, entre polaroid et numérique, pour les exposer tels quels. Et c'est tant mieux: il n'y a rien qu'y n'ai besoin de mots. Je souhaite juste prolonger l'instant magique passé en compagnie de mes amis Victoria et Federico. Paris, donc...

Je suis actuellement dans les préparatifs d'un voyage qui commencera par l'arrivée de mes amis Victoria et Federico à Nantes, pour se poursuivre à Paris, l'occasion de revoir mon Clément et enfin... San Francisco, chez mes amis Mike et Alex Dutton [Hello, Raven !].

Ce voyage sera l'occasion de rencontrer David Dutton, le frère de mon ami Mike. Avec son autorisation, voici une de ses vidéos. San Francisco toujours, il s'agit de la dernière "Love Parade" sur Market Street. Je vous invite à explorer son travail.

Bonjour à tous,
il y a un mois de cela, j'ai été contacté par les éditions Petit à petit afin de participer à un collectif érotique, chaque auteurs adaptant un poème. Avec quatre pages et le poème "À Une Inhumaine" de Henri Cantel, j'ai composé cette étrange histoire où le fantasme, l'érotisme, passent presque plus par la relation de cet étrange couple à la photographie qu'à une sexualité "classique". Les chances de s'exprimer en média mixtes sur le marché Français sont plutôt minces et c'était donc un véritable challenge, et surtout un grand plaisir de pouvoir contribuer à cette anthologie. Je ne connais pas encore le "Line-up" du livre, mais je sais déjà que mes amis Clément et Clo seront de la partie, yay ! Le livre devrait sortir en novembre, si ma mémoire est correcte.

Un grand merci à Olivier Petit, pour sa confiance. À Clément et Clo, à Serpico, le plus beau chat de la Terre, au café et à Depeche Mode/Deftones/Fever Ray.

Voici les pages 1 et 3 de mon récit, je ne montre pas tout pour ne pas gâcher la surprise de la lecture. Ho, une dernière chose: la typo sur cette version n'est pas définitive, aussi ne soyez pas surpris de voir une version différente à l'impression.

I was contacted a month ago by Petit à petit publishing, for participate to a French comic book anthology, each artist making an adaptation from French erotic poems. With four pages to do and after selecting "À Une Inhumaine" by Henri Cantel, I made that strange story where, for that weird couple, erotism happen to be a relationship with photography itself, more than a "normal" approach of sexuality. Opportunities for me to make a narrative, using mixed-media are close to zero on the French market, so you can understand how happy I am actually.

N°127: Deviation[s]

Me voilà devant l'écran, les yeux grands ouvert, cherchant à me souvenir de ce mois passé. Les jours me semblent s'être enchainés aussi vite que les suites de 1 et de 0 de mon ordinateur. Je vous montrerai le résultat très bientôt.

Il y a quelques notes, et probablement un bon mois de cela, je vous ai parlé de l'anneau de Kayser-Fleischer et de ma volonté de caractériser les personnages du récit sur lequel je travaillais alors. Très bien, excellente direction artistique, coco. Sauf qu'avec le temps, les manifestations les plus cliniques se sont estompées, pour finalement disparaitre. La cause ? Éviter de basculer vers un récit fantastico-médical alors qu'il s'agit en réalité d'un récit fantastico-érotique. Je garde néanmoins mes idées dans un recoin de ma tête, ça pourra toujours servir.

Durant mes nuits de travail, seulement trois albums tournaient en boucle. Il s'agit de "Saturday Night Wrist" des Deftones, de "Songs Of Faith And Devotion" par Depeche Mode. Un choix à priori bizarre, alors que je peignais des femmes nues. À croire que je cherchais déjà la rédemption pour être un si vilain garçon. :P

Le troisième album est celui, éponyme, de Fever Ray, un groupe que je ne connaissais pas avant de l'entendre sur la radio-blog de Véronique Meignaud. Un clip vidéo que m'a montré Erin, aka Bluefooted, a achevé de me convaincre. Merci Mesdames !

N°124: His Kayser-Fleischer Ring

Le projet sur lequel je travaille actuellement nécessite que les personnages manifestent certaines caractéristiques "bizarres", afin de les singulariser [1]. Les yeux, surtout. Après avoir fait quelques recherches, mon choix s'arrêtera sur la maladie de Wilson, et surtout sa manifestation la plus spectaculaire: l'anneau de Kayser-Fleischer. En gros, le foie produit trop de cuivre, et celui ci se répand à travers le corps via la circulation sanguine. Au niveau des yeux, le cuivre forme un anneau marron tout autour de l'iris, et ne se révèle que si exposé à une forte lumière. On estime que moins d'un pour cent de la population mondiale est atteinte par cette maladie.

L'idée est restée, même si en commençant ce dessin, je me demandais comment lui donner forme. J'ai commencé par dessiner le visage à la tablette graphique, puis j'ai fait mon collage et alors que la peinture séchait... J'ai tout simplement photographié le fond de café dans mon mug. Avec ou sans flash, en changeant les expositions, ect... Une fois ma tambouille passée au scan, je repasse des coups de brosses sur photoshop, puis ré-intègre localement mes éléments photographiques.

Voilà à quoi ressemblent mes journées/nuits en ce moment.
Voilà ce qui se passe dans ma tête. :P
[je sens que je vais payer pour cette dernière phrase !]

Ceci est un work in progress pour un projet dont je ne peux pas dire grand chose pour l'instant.
À vos yeux, cette image peut apparaitre comme étant loin d'être terminée, j'en suis conscient, mais cela faisait trop longtemps que je n'avais pas posté sur ce blog, alors va pour une version incomplète. En réalité, c'est beaucoup plus avancé que ça: J'ai juste "forcé" un peu les choses sur une version antérieure de ce dessin afin d'explorer plusieurs options, plusieurs ambiances. Ceci est la version "jusqu'au boutiste". :P

Tout cela est bien mystérieux...

Last weekend was for me the opportunity to drive north to my beloved Brittany, the good ol' celtic land where I born and spent almost the half of my life so far...

The reason ? Be present to "Les Rencontres De L'Imaginaire" a small but unique event set in Broceliande forest, a place full of legends. So as I drive trough the country, street names turned into "Korigans streets" or "Lancelot Road" and I knew I was driving in the right direction. It was for me the chance to see French illustrators Aleksi Briclot and Jean-Sebastien Rossbach [Also known as Living Rope] signing "Merlin", a beautiful illustrated 110 pages monster, writted by Jean-Luc Istin. And also spend some time with illustrator extraordinaire, Agata Kawa. Here's a medley of the event:

Seriously, this book is a masterpiece, something unique on the french market. I give you the link to Amazon.fr where you can order it. ;) You guys will have a blast pages after pages. A quick thought, however: I read here and there some people thinking they will buy the book, even if they don't speack french. I understand that feeling, but it's time to give a review of Istin's work. It is brilliant ! If the project was to define Merlin's life, Istin never fall in the fashion style of a "reboot", a "Ultimate Merlin" or others "Merlin Begins". There's a couple of surprises here and there, but it's a respectful interpretation of a well-known tale.

I'm enjoying a little run on the beach and once back home, I start drawing a few doodles.
Trying in some case to make a good balance between digital drawing and textures.

And in other case, I try to work in a "raw", energic way...

Having a lil' chat with my friend Victoria for lunch, she brought artist such as Dave Cooper to my attention, and then I remember this video I saw months ago and where he worked on... Here's my soundtrack for the rest of the afternoon. At last, a cartoon with fat-ass chicks ! Thank you, Lord ! ^^

After a couple of weeks exposed to air and light, polaroid negatives films start to reveal many alterations on their surfaces, wich is all good for me ! ^^ Fingerprints, brushtrokes, everything goes to give a lil' help. So today is just a doodle to see how these negatives can be used. Next time, I'll give more lovin to the drawing.

Cela faisait longtemps que l'idée trottait dans un recoin de ma tête [1]...
et puis finalement, voilà qui est fait: je me suis fendu d'un Holgaroïd 120, tout droit sorti des usines Polaroïd au Mexique et importé via l'Autriche. Ainsi que son adaptateur pour pellicule type 100. Ainsi que des pellicules type 100, cela va sans dire.

Je crois que de ma vie, je n'ai jamais tenu un appareil aussi dysfonctionnel entre mes mains. Le Holgaroïd ressemble à un gros jouet en plastique, dont les pièces semblent tenir ensemble par la force du saint-esprit. Une fois l'adaptateur type 100 monté, on réalise qu'on peut difficilement activer le flash et SURTOUT qu'on ne peux plus regarder à travers l'objectif. Tout cela est recouvert par le volumineux boitier de l'adaptateur. La solution: coller via une languette adhésive un petit viseur en plastique, qui bien sûr cadre tout sauf la photo que vous allez prendre. Ha, les joies de cadrer avec l'œil gauche [2]. Mention très bien à la notice, où l'on se dit, que non, ça ne peut pas être aussi simple. Une fois le tout monté, on devine facilement que la bête est aussi hermétique qu'une passoire, la lumière doit rentrer de partout ! Ajoutez à cela que la moitié des films achetés sont périmés et vous comprendrez sans peine l'état d'excitation qui est le mien à l'heure où j'écris ces lignes.

Vous savez, toutes formes d'accidents sont plus que bienvenues dans ma production. Il faut bien l'admettre, faire de la photo "sans filet" est une chose que je souhaitais recommencer à faire de manière plus régulière. Il ne s'agit pas cependant d'exclure le numérique, loin de là. Je ne pense même pas qu'il y ait de débat "véritable" entre analogique et numérique. Pour moi cette question est nulle.

Voilà donc les premiers essais avec un film sépia type 100, par temps couvert. Il faut séparer le film négatif du positif après le temps de développement. Vous pouvez donc voir les pola' en positifs, leurs négatifs ainsi qu'une petite bidouille photoshop pour récupérer les dits négatifs, en positifs noir et blanc. C'est tout cra-cra avec un grain pas possible, miam !!! ^^

Pour l'instant, je considère faire toutes les erreurs possibles et imaginables, le privilège des débutants. :P Mais les perspectives offertes valent bien le sacrifice de quelques pellicules, non ?

[2] Une très bonne chose par ailleurs, surtout en analogique. Essayez un jour de cadrer une photo en vous servant de votre "mauvais œil" et utilisez le "bon" pour la mise au point. Avec un trépied et une composition très chargée, comme des batiments, cela peut s'avérer utile. Celà tient à la manière dont vos yeux sont reliés à votre cerveau et faire travailler ainsi les parties "rationnelle" et "reptilienne". On élimine ainsi plus facilement le "superflu" du cadre.

A few months ago, Steven Gettis contacted me to make a picture for his awesome collection. I have to illustrate my favourite novel character or my favourite writter. The opening line of Neuromancer pop up in my head immediatly. More than the cyberpunk folklore he somehow created, I think the reason why I love William Gibson so much is probably his writting process, his style. Kinda like at the crossroad of William Burroughs and David Bowie writting science-fiction. That and many other things.

So this is my "usual" combo of collage, acrylic and photography mixed on Mac. Initially, I planed to incorporate the opening line of Neuromancer in the composition, but I finally gave up once I realised it was not a really good idea. One thing I wanted to avoid was all the Cyberpunk/Matrix folkore, like the green code lines running throught the entire picture. Even if the way I planed to include the sentence was completly different, I consider it being too close anyway. And I like how this illustration goes without anything hi-tech' in it.

Thanks to Steven Gettis for his awesome proposition and for his patience. A special thanks to Dave who provide me the english version of Neuromancer's first page. To Nic and Nénent, you guys know why. And to Véro, for an amazing critique that unfortunatly came a lil' too late, but that I will keep in mind for the future.

Quelques recherches faites entre deux commissions, pour ne pas perdre mon "mojo", comme disent les jeunes. Autant l'idée de dessiner des filles nues ne me dérange pas, mais les afficher sur mon blog, par contre... Je ne sais pas pourquoi, je n'en voyais pas l'intérêt. Ce n'est pas tellement une question de pudeur: plus j'avance sur l'image, plus la charge érotique du sujet disparait. Seule la méthode compte pour moi.

Il aura donc fallu tout le talent de persuasion de Dave Palumbo, pour me convaincre de poster cet ensemble. Il faut avouer aussi que j'étais absent depuis... Et bien, trop longtemps !

L'image suivante est considérée comme "ratée". Je suis quand même content de cette portion. Rater comme ça, je veux bien le faire tous les jours ! ^^

Hi, gang.
I wish you guys [and gals] a happy new year. May 2009 bring you all what is necessary to your comfort and happiness, for you, your familly and friends.

On a personal side, 2008 started in awfull ways [pneumonia=4 months in bed, including a two months straight run !], to a point, I thought it was a lost year on art side. However, as I start to get healthier, I got a few publications in a row and it was enough for "re-load" that old machine of mine. Let's add to that the great time I had in America, the great people I had the chance to met on both side of the ocean and you will understand that I finished that 2008 on a brighter side !!! Yay ! ^^ Can 2009 be on the same roll as I ended 2008 !

Une image casse-croute pour aujourd'hui. Un petit breack pris sur mon temps de travail... et de sommeil. Je suis cramé ! Allez, Zou ! Repos !

Ce soir, c'est décidé: je vais trouver le courage de lire "Généalogie d'une Sorcière", des talentueux Benjamin Lacombe et Sébastien Perez. Jusqu'à présent, toutes les excuses étaient valables pour éviter d'ouvrir le livre acheté juste avant mon départ pour les états-unis. La peur de lire quelque chose de "so good it hurts", comme disent les Américains. On en parlera un jour. ^^
